Timothy Fosu-Mensah was one of the few highlights for Manchester United fans last season.
The Dutch defender, who turned 18 in January, is widely considered to be one of the club’s most talented young players and, overall, didn’t look out of his depth while making his first appearances for the senior team at the back end of the 2015-16 campaign.
Fosu-Mensah made his first-team debut in the 3-2 win over Arsenal in February and went on to make nine more appearances for the Red Devils before the end of the season.

However, according to the Daily Mail, Jose Mourinho - whose track record when it comes to bringing through young players pales in comparison to that of some other elite coaches - has told the versatile right-back that he won’t be needed at Old Trafford this term.
Both Fosu-Mensah and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, who also impressed fans last season, have been informed they’re not in their manager’s plans.

United fans react to Fosu-Mensah reports
This has sparked quite a reaction on social media, with many United fans taking to Twitter to express their bemusement at Mourinho’s reported decision.
Mourinho has 'decided' to axe nine in total
The call to get rid of Bastian Schweinsteiger makes logical sense - the World Cup winner looked a shadow of his former self last season, he’s injury prone, turns 32 in a few days time and is picking up a massive £160,000 a week - but fans can’t understand why Mourinho would want to axe two of the club’s most gifted youngsters.
The Mail’s report also states that Paddy McNair, Tyler Blackett, Andrea Pereira, Adnan Januzaj, Will Keane and James Wilson are also not in the manager’s plans for the 2016-17 season.
The aforementioned players are likely to leave Old Trafford, either permanently or on loan deals, before the summer transfer window closes next month.
United need cash with Pogba on his way...
With Paul Pogba set to sign for a world-record transfer fee - and rest assured, he’ll be on massive wages - Mourinho is acutely aware that getting rid of the deadwood in his squad is now a priority.
But fans will be up in arms - and perhaps right so - if Fosu-Mensah is one of those forced to make way this summer.
