Ask any Liverpool fan what position they still need to strengthen this summer and almost all of them will say “left-back.”

It’s fair to say Alberto Moreno isn’t exactly a fan favourite at Anfield and, without any adequate cover, the Spaniard looks set to be playing week in week out once again this season.

Even during Liverpool’s Europa League final 3-1 defeat to Seville, club legend Jamie Carragher tweeted: "Jurgen, transfer committee, anyone sign a f***ing left back," after Moreno's terrible performance saw the Anfield club collapse in the second-half.

The Reds have been linked with numerous left-back this summer, most notably Leicester youngster Ben Chilwell. However, the 19-year-old has recently signed a new deal with the Premier League champions, meaning he won’t be making a move to Merseyside this transfer window.

And, it appears that Jurgen Klopp may disagree with Liverpool fans that his side need a left-sided defender. That’s because the Liverpool Echo are reporting the German manager may have found an alternative to Moreno in the form of James Milner.

Milner is regarded as being extremely versatile and is no stranger to playing in the full-back positions. The 30-year-old midfielder played at both right-back and left-back during the 1-0 friendly defeat to Chelsea on Thursday morning, suggesting that Klopp is experimenting with the idea.

With Joe Gomez struggling with an Achilles injury, Jon Flanagan expected to go out on loan and Andre Wisdom set to be sold before the season starts, Liverpool are seriously lacking in the full-back areas.

Therefore, Milner - who could find it difficult to play regularly in centre midfield this campaign - may well be asked by Klopp to do a job in defence next season.

It’s certainly an interesting idea and don’t be surprised to see Milner in a left-back role when the Reds take on Arsenal on August 14.

Whether it’s a new signing or Milner, Liverpool fans will hardly care - as long as it’s not Moreno.
