Manchester United fans were up in arms on Thursday night after it was reported that Timothy Fosu-Mensah, the Red Devils’ talented young defender, wasn’t in Jose Mourinho’s plans for the new season.
The Netherlands Under-19 international was one of nine United players named by the Daily Mail who had been informed by Mourinho that he wasn’t needed at Old Trafford.
Some United fans on Twitter called Mourinho “insane” and it was easy to understand why they were so panicked by the news. Fosu-Mensah clearly has a bright future and offloading him this summer could prove to be a huge mistake a few years down the line.

However, the Daily Mail performed a U-turn on Friday, claiming the 18-year-old has been assured he *does* have a future at Old Trafford after all.
Moreover, Mourinho is keen for the defender to sign a long-term contract with the club.
United fans’ fears were eased further when Jonathan Barnet, Fosu-Menah’s agent, told Voetbal International: "All those rumors in media are from nowhere. Timothy Fosu-Mensah stays at Manchester United."
Mourinho will use Fosu-Mensah this season
And now The Times have clarified the situation, revealing that Fosu-Mensah will spend the season as part of the first-team squad, despite reports claiming otherwise.
The reason he didn’t train with the United first team earlier this week was due to injury; according to the Manchester Evening News, the Dutchman tweaked his calf in China.
What Mourinho told Fosu-Mensah on arrival
The Times have also revealed that Mourinho was a fan of Fosu-Mensah even before he arrived at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese coach told the teenager how highly he regards him when he replaced Louis van Gaal earlier this summer.
Why United fans are excited by Fosu-Mensah
It seems there was never any chance of Mourinho allowing Fosu-Mensah to leave the club and that news is sure to please the United faithful.
Built powerfully and blessed with impressive pace, Fosu-Mensah made his first-team debut for the Red Devils in the 3-2 win over Arsenal last February.
He went on to make nine more appearances for the Premier League giants before the end of the campaign.
Fosu-Mensah will challenge Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian for the right-back spot this season and could even start in next Sunday’s Community Shield against Leicester City at Wembley.
