It's said football fans can be a fickle, unforgiving group of people.

Wayne Rooney felt the full brunt of Manchester United fans' wrath after a dismal first-half performance in the pre-season friendly against Galatasaray, but he then silenced them in superb fashion with two goals.

In the first 45 minutes, not even Zlatan Ibrahimovic's strike could draw enough attention away from Rooney's poor display as he struggled in a number 10 role behind the forward.

Twitter reacted just as you'd expect, with United fans calling for their former favourite to be sold, preferably to a Chinese Super League club with lots of money.

Fans silenced

Jose Mourinho clearly shared their frustrations, moving the England captain to the right and switching Henrikh Mkhitaryan into the vacated space, perhaps a sign of things to come this season.

It's still not clear what role the club's second-highest all-time scorer is going to play under Mourinho, who insisted he wouldn't operate him in the same way as his predecessor Louis van Gaal.

Uncertain role

However, whatever he said to him at half-time clearly worked, with the first goal coming from an Antonio Valencia cross, the second from the penalty spot after Marcus Rashford won the spot-kick with a brilliant run.

Rooney's going to have his work cut out to impress United fans over the course of the coming campaign, with many already seemingly having made their minds up.
