You’d think that Jose Mourinho would be satisfied with his Manchester United squad after signing Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan while also being on the verge of capturing Paul Pogba.
But it seems that the Special One isn’t quite finished yet because he’s setting his sights on another centre-back.
That’s according to ESPN, who claim that Mourinho is seeking a ‘Nemanja Vidic-style’ defender before the summer transfer window slams shut. The report claims that sources have told them that the Portuguese manager is now turning his attentions to a new defender as he’s relaxed in the knowledge that Pogba is set to arrive.
Despite spending £30million on Villarreal’s Eric Bailly, Mourinho still wants another centre-back at the club and has his sights set on three different options.
The United chiefs have discussed the possibility of signing Mourinho’s compatriot Jose Fonte from Southampton, although his advancing years - he turns 33 in December - may put the club off.
However, the report also claims that the club are looking into the possibility of signing Leonardo Bonucci from Juventus. But with the Old Lady selling Pogba to United, it’s highly unlikely that they would also allow Bonucci to leave for Old Trafford too.
The third option is John Stones. The Everton defender has been heavily linked with Manchester City but Mourinho may consider stealing the 22-year-old from under Pep Guardiola’s nose. The issue with Stones is that he doesn’t fit the profile of Vidic - something that Mourinho desperately wants.
Chris Smalling looks to be nailed-on to start in central defence this season following a fairly impressive campaign last time.
Mourinho on Bailly
However, his partner is still not confirmed. Mourinho has raised doubts over new signing Bailly by saying: "My only question mark at the moment is one I have to help him delete - the question mark of someone who has never played at such a big club with so many responsibilities and so many expectations.
"So is Eric ready to come here and start performing from day one? I don't know. It is a question mark but my job is to delete that question mark as soon as possible and give him the stature, brain and personality to play for Manchester United.”
Phil Jones, Daley Blind and Marcus Rojo are all other alternatives to become Smalling’s partner but, if ESPN are to be believed, he is keen to look elsewhere.
