Just when Arsenal fans were starting to get excited about the prospect of signing Julian Draxler, their hopes have been immediately extinguished.
After the winger revealed in an interview that he was desperate to leave Wolfsburg this summer, Gooners were, unsurprisingly, keen for Arsene Wenger to make a move for one of the club’s long-time targets.
With Draxler telling Bild that he wanted to leave Germany for a “top international club,” Arsenal supporters believed this was a direct come-and-get-me-plea to Wenger.

However, it looks as though Arsenal won’t be perusing a deal for Draxler. That’s according to Standard Sport who claim Arsenal have made no enquiry for the 22-year-old and don’t intend to, with the north London club currently focusing on signing a striker and a defender.
To make the deal even more unlikely, Wolfsburg have also released a statement that reads: "In joint discussions with Julian Draxler, VfL Wolfsburg again made it clear that they would not be granting the player’s wish to make a move.

"We now consider any possible uncertainties to have been eradicated and that all parties can revert back to a professional and responsible collaboration for the good of VfL Wolfsburg and, in particular, for our fans."
So, it looks as though Draxler to Arsenal is definitely not going to happen then.
But that doesn’t mean the Gunners won’t be making any transfers in the near future. As the report mentioned, Wenger is keen to add a forward and a centre-back to his squad before the start of the season next weekend.
A forward and a defender
Those two players are likely to be Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette and Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi.
Arsenal had a £31.8m bid for Lacazette publicly rejected by the French club, although their manager Bruno Genesio has since admitted: "He can leave if Lyon want him to. There are some offers that you cannot refuse."
Where Mustafi is concerned, Wenger is desperate for a new centre-back given the long-term injury picked up Per Mertesacker.
“I don’t count that Per will be back before the end of the year and I will miss him deeply, we have lost a heavyweight in our dressing room,” he said.
“We are still in the market for players, whether it is at the front or the back. Unfortunately we are not alone.
"Do I think we will sign an experienced central defender before the season starts? Yes, I do.”
So, it seems as though there will be no Draxler at the Emirates this season - although Lacazette and Mustafi could still arrive.
