Roberto Martinez left Everton in May with his reputation in tatters. He had guided the Toffees to a disappointing 12th in the Premier League and apparently fell out with a number of first-team players in the process.
There were a number of pundits trying to predict where the Spaniard would end up next with Hull City seemingly the perfect place for him to start again. One place people didn't expect was Belgium's national team.
With Marc Wilmots gone, Belgium had been searching for a new head coach since their disastrous Euro 2016 exit to Wales. Arguably the most talented squad in the world, any manager would be charged with the task of winning the next World Cup or, at the very least, reaching the final.
So Martinez is definitely a strange choice and no one appeared more shocked than Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian finds himself in the curious position of being reunited with Martinez after probably assuming he would never work with him again.
Upon the news breaking, BT Sport's cameras panned to the striker, who had just come off the pitch in Wayne Rooney's testimonial game at Old Trafford. His team-mates immediately started speaking to him and his eyes suddenly widened before his head fell into his hands.
We don't, of course, know what was said but it is clear Lukaku had just been fed some surprise news. And how many things could surprise a man like Lukaku? Take a look at the video below and we're sure you will agree.
But Lukaku is not the only one surprised by the news. The whole of Twitter is currently in meme meltdown over Martinez's appointment. The world and his dog wants its two pennies on this subject and all seem to be saying the same thing: WTF!?!
