Arsenal "not persuing" Mahrez.

BBC Journalist provides update on three Arsenal transfer targets

Published 5 Comments

There’s just over one week until the new Premier League season begins and Arsenal have only added one notable player to their squad.

They may have secured the services of Granit Xhaka for £30 million but the arrivals of Rob Holding from Bolton and Japan striker Takuma Asano have done very little to excite the fanbase.

However, in recent days, the Gunners have been heavily linked with a number of top-class talent in the newspapers.

A defender and a striker are two positions that Arsene Wenger is obviously keen to strengthen with Alexandre Lacazette and Shkodran Mustafi the two names being talked about.

However, two wingers that the club have been rumoured to be interested in are Riyad Mahrez and Julian Draxler.

Mahrez was magnificent in helping Leicester win the Premier League last year and the Foxes’ manager Claudio Ranieri has publicly urged him to remain at the King Power this season.

Meanwhile, Draxler sensationally demanded a move this week, causing plenty of Arsenal supporters to get pretty excited about the possibility of signing a long-term target of theirs.

Look away now, Arsenal fans

However, Arsenal fans who were looking forward to the prospect to signing one, or both, of Mahrez and Draxler, prepare to be bitterly disappointed.

That’s because BBC Sport journalist David Ornstein has revealed that Arsenal are “not pursuing Mahrez or Draxler.”

Many Gooners will know full well that Ornstein is very knowledgeable when it comes to transfer rumours concerning the north London club, hence the nickname ‘The Ornacle.’

So, it seems that a move for those two players is well and truly off. But, what about Lacazette and Mustafi?

Interest in Mustafi

Well, in the same tweet, Ornstein revealed that Arsenal are interested in the Valencia defender but admitted there was still no bid from Wenger. He added that Chelsea are also interested in the former Everton centre-back.

With Per Mertesacker ruled out for several months, Wenger has already admitted that he thinks he will sign another defender in the coming weeks.

“I don’t count that Per will be back before the end of the year and I will miss him deeply, we have lost a heavyweight in our dressing room,” he said.

Do I think we will sign an experienced central defender before the season starts? Yes, I do.”

Want a striker

Ornstein also highlighted that the club also want a striker, but didn’t name Lacazette.

Wenger was desperate to sign Leicester’s Jamie Vardy at the beginning of the summer but failed in his quest to sign the England striker.

The club have also been linked with the likes of Alvaro Morata and Gonzalo Higuain but it seems as though they’ve finally settled on Lacazette. Whether they can get the deal over the line or not remains to be seen.

So, there we have it, Arsenal fans. A very disappointing transfer update from Ornstein.
