The Football Association have rejected Wolves' appeal against Chris Iwelumo's red card at Deepdale on Saturday.

The striker, who has been in impressive form for the Championship league leaders - netting six goals in four league starts, will now serve a three-match ban and miss the games against Bristol City, Reading and Swansea.

Wolves felt Iwelumo was wrongfully dismissed when shown red for an alleged headbutt on Preston's Sean St Ledger following an aerial clash with the defender.

Both players visited referee Martin Atkinson following Wolves 3-1 victory, in which Iwelumo bagged a hat-trick, to insist any clash had been accidental.

A statement from the FA read: At a Regulatory Commission hearing, a claim for wrongful dismissal by Wolverhampton Wanderers' Chris Iwelumo was rejected.

"Iwelumo was sent off for violent conduct at Preston North End on Saturday September 20. The automatic three-match ban will therefore come in with immediate effect."
