It would be a major shock if Cristiano Ronaldo fails to win the 2016 Ballon d’Or after Real Madrid won the Champions League and Portugal were crowned European champions at Euro 2016.

The 31-year-old, who has already won the prestigious individual accolade three times, also scored a ridiculous 51 goals in 48 appearances for his club last season.

Ronaldo’s odds of winning the Ballon d’Or were cut after Portugal beat France in the Euro 2016 final last month, but Jose Mourinho has caused a stir by claiming the former Manchester United player didn’t help in “any way”.

The world-class forward was stretchered off in the 25th minute following a rough tackle from Dimitri Payet, but returned to rally his teammates from the touchline in extra-time.

The game was eventually settled in the 109th minute, when Eder smashed the ball from 25 yards past Hugo Lloris.

Mourinho: Ronaldo didn't help in the final

Speaking about the role Ronaldo played, Mourinho was quoted as saying by ESPN on Friday: "Cristiano Ronaldo didn't help in any way by doing that in the final few minutes of the Euros final.

"There were 11 players on the pitch doing their job, and the person in charge of directing them was the coach.

"I saw it as an overload of emotion from someone who saw that the team was just minutes away from achieving an objective which everyone wanted."

Ronaldo's Instagram response

Shortly after those quotes were published, however, Ronaldo appeared to issue a response on Instagram.

He posted a photo of himself and teammates celebrating with the Henri Delaunay Cup, alongside the caption: “Quick remind🇵🇹🔝”.

The post has already been liked 1.3 million times.

It appears this was Ronaldo’s way of saying to Mourinho - and the rest of his critics - that it doesn’t matter what they say.
