Morgan Schneiderlin reveals he wants to "eat football" ahead of Community Shield clash

Published 5 Comments

Manchester United's first chance to win silverware under Jose Mourinho comes tomorrow when they face Premier League champions Leicester City in the Community Shield at Wembley.

Morgan Schneiderlin moved to Old Trafford last summer for £25 million, but he feels that he didn't meet his own expectations of himself in his first campaign at the club. The 26-year-old developed into a top-class defensive midfielder during his time at Southampton, and as a result, many people feel that there is much more to come from him.

In a recent interview with MUTV, the Frenchman revealed that he is ready to fight for a regular first-team place at United this season and is hungrier than ever to impress.

Disappointing summer

It was a disappointing summer for Schneiderlin, despite his nation reaching the Euro 2016 Final. He was only selected for the France squad after injury forced Lassana Diarra to withdraw, and he was an unused substitute throughout the entire tournament.

Commenting on his lack of involvement at the Euros, the United man admitted, "I'm not going to deny it was frustrating in the summer. I wanted to play. It was not the case but it's made me even hungrier and even more determined to have a good season."

Schneiderlin continued, "I don't want to go through that spell again. I want to work hard to be very good this season so, yes, now I just want to play and to enjoy it."

Schneiderlin eager to impress

The competition for places in Mourinho's squad is extremely intense, especially in Schneiderlin's position. Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera, Daley Blind, Marouane Fellaini and the seemingly extradited Bastian Schweinsteiger can all play in central midfield, something which the French international has acknowledged.

"Every player wants to play but with competition you improve," he said. "I'm going to give my best and after, I always say, it's the manager's choice which is the best pair he wants to play or the best midfield three he wants to put in."

With that said, United fans will be pleased to hear that Morgan is keen to show everyone what he is capable of. "I'm going to fight for my place every day and will see what is going to be. But, of course, I want to play. I'm hungrier after last season, it was not the season I expected and I want to prove myself. I want to eat football!"

Community Shield vital for United

Schneiderlin also told MUTV that the FA Cup holders are desperate to lay down a marker ahead of the new campaign by winning the Community Shield on Sunday. "It's a serious trophy," the United star claimed.

"The manager has made us aware of the fact that he wants to win it. So we know that it is very important. We are playing the champions of England. We want to show we are there and we are ready to go in the Premier League. What better way to start than by lifting a trophy?"
