However, with the tournament boasting some amazing talent with the likes of Gran Metalik, Kota Ibushi and Zack Sabre Jr. only a handful of the stars on show, it was only a matter of time before more competitors impressed the fans.
On this week’s episode, fans were treated to another fantastic match as Ibushi was going up against Cedric Alexander.
The second-round match saw plenty of near-falls, and it was a great all-around match between the two men, but it was Ibushi who advanced to the quarter-final after hitting his Golden Star Powerbomb.
Ibushi is perhaps the biggest name in the tournament, and it’s the one name the WWE are struggling to tie down to a deal. Despite his popularity, it was Alexander that was receiving the praise from the fans in attendance.
As you can see in the video, the fans showed their appreciation to an overwhelmed and emotional Alexander, prompting chants that thanked him while also wanting him to be signed to the WWE.
It’s one thing having the fans appreciate your work, but it’s another thing when Triple H – the man overseeing the tournament and responsible for the success of NXT – comes out to the stage.
This can be taken one of two ways, either Alexander was taking too long in returning to the back, or The Game was genuinely impressed with him and the fans. Especially when you consider he gave the fans a thumbs up when they were chanting at him to sign him to a contract.
Alexander was one of the names that was doing the rounds online in regards to signing a deal with the company, and if Triple H’s actions are anything to go by, the confirmation could come sooner rather than later.
