You’d think that after spending almost £150 million and smashing the world transfer record, Jose Mourinho would be totally satisfied with his summer's work.
While that may well be the case, it seems the Portuguese manager still wants to add to his squad.
Eric Bailly (£30 million), Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£26 million), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (free) and Paul Pogba (£89 million) have all arrived at Old Trafford, but the Special One wants one more player.
That man, according to reports, is Southampton’s Jose Fonte.
Despite Fonte turning 33 in December, Mourinho believes his countryman can add some valuable experience to the United back-line. And Mourinho is so desperate to sign him that he is willing to offer a player in return.
According to The Sun, the Special One is willing to give the Saints Marcus Rojo as he tries to prise their captain away from St Mary’s.
It seems Rojo doesn’t have a future at the Theatre of Dreams with Mourinho deciding the Argentine isn’t needed this season.
And some United fans may question the need for Fonte after Eric Bailly has made a terrific start to his career in England with Chris Smalling set to return from injury.
However, after Bailly had signed for the Red Devils, Mourinho admitted that he was unsure if the 22-year-old was ready for regular first-team football. Bringing Fonte in alongside him could help him progress as a player and take him out of the firing line occasionally.
However, the report claims that Arsenal are also interested in Fonte. The Gunners, who have Per Mertesacker and Gabriel out injured, are in desperate need of a defender - highlighted after losing 4-3 to Liverpool on Sunday.
But it seems as though Mourinho and United have the upper hand in the chase for Fonte with him willing to offer Southampton a player in return.
