Varney eyes promotion push

Charlton striker Luke Varney is looking for three points at Cardiff on Saturday to put his side "right in the mix".

The Addicks currently lie 14th in the Championship table, but a much-needed 2-1 win over Ipswich before the international break has raised hopes of a promotion push at The Valley.

"We're four points off the top four and three points off the bottom four. One win can catapult you up the league, and everyone is just looking for back-to-back wins," said Varney.

"It would put us right in the mix. We want to be up there around the play-offs and the automatic promotion positions.

"Winning breeds confidence. In the Championship people talk about getting two points per game, so on that basis we can go into the next game knowing a draw wouldn't be a bad result.

"But we go to Cardiff hoping we can win, and, after Ipswich, I'm sure we'll be going there all guns blazing."
