Jose Mourinho wants to make Jose Fonte his fifth major signing of the transfer window, with the Southampton skipper's experience a major attraction for the Manchester United manager.
The 32-year-old only has a year left on his contract at St Mary's, and even though the south-coast club have offered him a new deal, he is yet to agree new terms.
Fonte captained the Saints at Old Trafford on Friday night and Mourinho would've seen him get overpowered by Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the opening goal of United's 2-0 win.

That said, the Portuguese international helped his country win Euro 2016 and his physical, no-nonsense style has seen him develop into one of the Premier League's most reliable defenders in recent times.
Fonte to help Bailly
Mourinho believes that his compatriot would be able to aid the development of Eric Bailly, who has made a fantastic start to his Man United career since arriving from Villarreal in the summer.

The 22-year-old's potential is clear for all to see, however his relative inexperience at the highest level means that inconsistency may creep into his game.
Bailly is very confident on the ball, but this sometimes leads him into trouble and the Ivorian made at least one mistake close to David de Gea's goal which could have resulted in the Red Devils conceding.
Fonte on United
Commenting on the possibility of United wanting to buy him, Fonte has previously said, "If there's interest, it's a reason to feel flattered to be associated with a club like Manchester United.
"It's true that I've known Mourinho for many years. We've faced each other many times, he knows me well."
United's defensive options
The United squad is currently full of centre-back options, however Mourinho feels that Fonte can bring a greater maturity to the position.
Eric Bailly and Daley Blind has been Mourinho's preferred central defensive partnership for the victories over Leicester City, Bournemouth and Southampton.
However, Chris Smalling returned to action on Friday night while both Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo are yet to feature in the league this season.
