Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has insisted that Arsenal should have attempted to sign new Manchester United defender Eric Bailly.
Bailly, 22, joined the Red Devils from La Liga outfit Villarreal earlier on in this transfer window and has impressed in his opening few games for the club.
Indeed, the tough tackling defender picked up successive Man of the Match awards against Leicester City in the Community Shield and Bournemouth in the Premier League, while he played an instrumental role in helping his side keep a clean sheet against Southampton at Old Trafford on Friday night.

While Bailly has impressed in recent weeks, Arsenal, despite keeping a clean sheet at the King Power Stadium against champions Leicester yesterday, have looked vulnerable.
With Per Mertesacker on the sidelines, youngsters Calum Chambers and Rob Holding have had to play prominent roles for the team in the opening couple of games of the new season.

Arsenal should have swooped
Understandably, then, Merson believes Arsenal should have swooped for United's new defender.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson stated: "The Man United centre-half looks like a centre-half. You look at Eliaquim Mangala last year and you thought “£30m, that was a bit strong!
"But I just look at the Man United lad [Bailly] and I think “why haven’t Arsenal gone for him?
"Wenger went to that club and inherited one of the best back fours of all-time. I’ll give him [Laurent] Koscielny and the other was Sol Campbell who was a no-brainer.
"Since then you can reel off 20 centre-halves who don’t even make up one player.
"What’s the problem?! He’s sitting next to one of the best centre-halves Arsenal have had in Steve Bould!"
Wenger must act
There's still time for Wenger to act in this transfer window, of course, but he must make his move sooner rather than later.
With the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and co. having strengthened so significantly, Arsenal are in serious danger of falling behind their rivals.
Who should Wenger sign before the close of the window? Have your say below!
