It’s looking increasing likely that Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi is set to become yet another transfer target that Arsenal have failed to sign this summer.
The German defender will join the likes of Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and Alexandre Lacazette in a long list of deals that they’ve failed to get over the line.
With just one week remaining in the transfer window, time is clearly running out for Arsene Wenger. While Arsenal fans will no doubt still like to see two or three further high-profile signings this summer, they know that that is now highly unlikely to happen.

But one position that Wenger simply needs to strengthen is in central defence. Per Mertesacker is ruled out until the new year while Gabriel is also sidelined for up to six weeks.
While Laurent Koscielny has now returned from his extended holiday, the Gunners had to field an inexperienced pairing of Rob Holding and Calum Chambers against Liverpool on the opening weekend of the season.

So, with the Mustafi deal seemingly dead in the water, it looks as though Wenger has turned his attentions to Manchester United defender Phil Jones.
Jones is likely to struggle to play regular first-team football at Old Trafford this season and Wenger is reportedly keen to bring him to the Emirates. But, did you know that the Arsenal boss previously attempted to sign Jones, five years ago?
Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol has revealed that Arsenal had a £16 million bid for Phil Jones accepted by Blackburn back in 2011 but Jones opted for Manchester United.
But now, five years on, will Jones choose to join the Gunners?
Well, he certainly will have more chance of playing. Jose Mourinho has moved to sign Eric Bailly this summer for £30 million and the Ivorian has started his United career very impressively. Alongside Bailly, Chris Smalling is likely to return to action this weekend for their trip to Hull City.
While Jones may be interested in joining Arsenal, there is one big problem in the form of Mourinho. According to the Evening Standard, the Portuguese boss doesn’t want to do any business with Wenger, especially as he knows how desperate he is to sign a centre-back.
Mourinho is already ruing the fact he allowed Petr Cech to join Arsenal last summer, a decision that looked even more foolish with the Gunners finishing second, while Chelsea finished tenth.
So, thanks to Mourinho, it seems as though Wenger’s move for Jones is set to fail yet again.
Which defender is next? Jonny Evans for £25 million?
