This was the year where West Ham were supposed to announce themselves as a new Premier League powerhouse. They moved into their new 60,000-seater stadium, were spending big in the transfer market and even had a European campaign to look forward to.
Well, not quite. Having qualified through Fair Play rules, the Hammers were forced to go through the qualifying stages to get into the Europa League proper. They tried and failed to do that very thing last season, crashing out to Romanian minnows Astra.
When they were drawn against the same club this time around, Slaven Bilic must have sensed an opportunity for revenge. West Ham were now richer, stronger and knew not to take them for granted. That was the idea, anyway.
Going into the second leg at the London Stadium, West Ham and Astra were level on a goal apiece. It was perfectly set up for a good evening until 35-year-old Filipe Teixeira gave Astra a shock lead.
As the game ticked on, tensions in the crowd started to appear and it seems it was too much for two fans, who got themselves into quite the scuffle as the game was going on.
Take a look at the footage below:
Having given it the biggen over the summer, their rivals took the chance to lash out at West Ham on Twitter and some of the reaction is, quite frankly, hilarious.
There are also plenty of messages for Simone Zaza, the Juventus star who is widely rumoured to be closing in on a £22m deal. The suggestion is he may be having second thoughts after seeing tonight's result.
