If you sat through the Champions League group stage draw on Thursday, you would have noticed the former Liverpool striker Ian Rush was having a fair bit of difficulty opening up the balls.

The 54-year-old received his fair share of stick on Twitter but saw the funny side of his struggles.

“Had a few problems with my balls tonight!! 😂😉“ the Welshman tweeted. “Interesting draw tho!! #UCLdraw ⚽⚽⚽”

However, the Catalan media have suggested there might be more to the story than there first appeared.

According to the Mirror’s Spanish football correspondent Ed Malyon, the Catalan media have suggested that Rush may have rigged Real Madrid’s Champions League draw.

Video: The 'evidence'?

Judge for yourself by watching the following video.

Rush opened up one of the balls, took out the piece of paper and then appeared to put it back down.

He then picked up a piece of paper - whether it was the same piece of paper or different is unclear - before opening it up and revealing the information inside.

There’s nothing to suggest any foul play was going on, although it’s the second accusation of rigging that has been made about the same draw.

Roberto Carlos has also been accused

The former Real Madrid full-back Roberto Carlos, at one point, picked up a ball before putting it back down a second later and choosing another.

However, an explanation for Carlos’ actions soon emerged.

The Brazilian had failed to mix up the balls before selecting one, hence why he put it back.

Load of rubbish?

If the Catalan media feel that the draw may have been rigged to land Real Madrid a favourable group-stage draw, surely they wouldn’t have ended up in the same group as Borussia Dortmund?

Zinedine Zidane’s men also find themselves in Group F alongside the Portuguese runners-up Sporting Lisbon and Polish champions Legia Warsaw.

The claim that Rush was helping to rig the draw sounds ridiculous, but is there anything in it? Have your say by leaving a comment below.
