Joel Matip praised by Liverpool fans for "fantastic" performance against Tottenham

Published 1 Comments

It's been a tospy-turvy start to the new Premier League season for Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp's men blitzed Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on the opening day, then lost 2-0 to Burnley a week later and today, they secured a point against Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

James Milner put Liverpool in front from the penalty spot only for Danny Rose to equalise with less than 20 minutes remaining.

Four points from three games is by no means disappointing, but Klopp will have hoped for better.

Despite surrendering their lead against Mauricio Pochettino's side, Liverpool can take plenty of positives away from the 1-1 draw - especially so Joel Matip's performance.

The Cameroonian, making his Premier League debut, was solid at the back throughout and looked comfortable alongside Dejan Lovren, who also had a good game.

Liverpool fans were certainly impressed by Matip's display, so much so that they think he should be Klopp's first-choice centre-back.

Quick, tall and strong, Matip looks like an absolutely bargain after keeping Harry Kane at bay.

Following the clash, Klopp hailed his defence but expressed disappointment at leaving White Hart Lane without a win.

He said, per Liverpool's official website: "I still feel a little bit disappointed, [even though] we took a point against Tottenham.

"When we played like this then I think we could have won the game, but it is like it is. We have to accept all the things that happened around [the game].

"There were not plenty more chances for a home game for a football-playing team, a good side like Tottenham. This says a lot about our defending."

Liverpool next face Premier League champions Leicester City at Anfield before travelling to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea, who have won each of their three games so far.
