For years, Wayne Rooney has been Manchester United’s talisman.
However, the club captain may have made more than 500 appearances for the club, but he is no longer the star man.
The arrivals of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba mean the Red Devils don't have to rely on the England international anymore.
Far from it, in fact.
Operating in a slightly deeper role, Rooney is failing to impact matches like he used to with the 30-year-old allowing games to pass him by.
That happened once again during his side’s clash against Hull on Saturday evening as they narrowly won 1-0. Rooney really struggled to stamp his authority on a match the Red Devils were expected to win fairly comfortably.
His lack of pace and mobility often slowed down his side's attacks and prevented them from breaking down Hull’s defence.
Despite being their skipper, United supporters weren’t afraid to criticise Rooney’s sub-standard display.
Check out their brutal assessment of his performance of Twitter:
Despite the reaction from the United fans, Rooney ended up creating the only goal of the match for his side with Marcus Rashford being in the right place at the right time in injury-time.
It was a brilliant assist and one that will leave the United fans regretting their earlier comments.
With Mourinho in charge, there certainly isn’t anyone safe in this United side. If Rooney continues to underperform, don’t be surprised to see him dropped from the starting XI.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan came on during the second-half of this evening's match and troubled the defence with his pace and showed exactly what the side were missing for large parts of the game.
The Premier League now has a two-week break due to international matches, but Rooney and his United teammates will be very much looking forward to their next Premier League match - the small matter of the Manchester Derby at Old Trafford.
Imagine if Mourinho decides to drop Rooney for that one.
