Roman Reigns will be involved in the Fatal 4 Way match.

Roman Reigns rumoured to replace Finn Balor as the new Universal Champion

Published 14 Comments

The WWE have been forced to change their plans yet again now that Finn Balor is out with a shoulder injury, as he relinquished his Universal Championship.

The original plans had him pencilled in to face Chris Jericho when moving up to the main roster, and while Roman Reigns was scheduled to defeat Seth Rollins at SummerSlam for the WWE Championship, Vince McMahon had other ideas.

His ‘punishment’ was to get down to the mid-card scene, and feud with Rusev for the United States Championship. Again, those plans seem to have been scrapped now that Reigns is involved in the fatal four way match taking place on Monday Night Raw to crown a new Universal Champion.

According to The Inquisitr, although Rollins, Kevin Owens and Big Cass are also involved in the match, it’s Reigns who is the favourite to be leaving as the new champion.

If this is true, the booking decisions do seem a little questionable as it wasn’t too long before Vince decided to take him out of the title picture, and in a matter of weeks, he’s back in there as the top guy on Raw.

However, one of the main reasons for doing this stems down to Balor’s injury.

The fact is, Raw needs a top face on the roster, and the plan all along was to have a face hold the championship title and then defend it against the biggest heel on the roster, in this case, it’s Rollins.

Reigns is the only logical choice at this rate, with other, perhaps more popular stars, not having the experience at the top level which Reigns brings to the table.

So it’s almost as if the WWE has no choice but to bring Reigns back as the top star, for now.

It’ll be interesting to see how the WWE books Balor back into the Universal Championship storyline when he returns, and whether it’s Reigns, Rollins or maybe even someone else who’s holding the title.
