Joel Matip had a Premier League debut to savour with a very assured performance during Liverpool's 1-1 draw at Tottenham on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp's defence had left a lot to be desired during their opening few matches of the domestic campaign but the inclusion of Matip appeared to calm the error-prone back four.

He nearly rounded off a perfect performance with a goal as he narrowly headed over from a corner in the second half.

Liverpool would have considered themselves quite unlucky to not walk away from White Hart Lane with three points after creating the better chances but Matip's debut was a huge positive for Klopp.

Matip made his competitive debut in the League Cup victory over Burton mid-week and clearly did enough to convince his new manager to stick with him in the Premier League.

And the Cameroonian's first appearance in England's top division has attracted plenty of praise from ex-Liverpool hero John Aldridge.

Writing in his column for the Liverpool Echo, Aldridge went to the extent of comparing him to former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand.

"I really like the look of Joel Matip who enjoyed an impressive Premier League debut against Spurs," Aldridge said.

"Watching him on Saturday made me think of Rio Ferdinand. Matip plays like him. He’s very good on the ball, passes it well and is a good header of the ball.

Burton Albion v Liverpool: EFL Cup

"Matip settles situations down. He takes the sting out of it and never seems to panic."

Of course, it has only been one game and Matip's next challenge will be replicating his performance in north London on a regular basis throughout the season.

Comparisons to Ferdinand might still be premature at this stage and it's unclear how Reds fans will respond to the idea of their new signing being likened to a Man United hero.

Tranmere Rovers v Liverpool - Pre-Season Friendly

The former Schalke defender, who arrived on a free transfer in the summer, should be able to nail down a first-team place after such a good debut, particularly given Mamadou Sakho's uncertain future.

Sakho could have walked into the Liverpool team last season but a summer falling out with the manager has seen the centre-back drop down the pecking order and could now depart Anfield on loan before the window closes on Wednesday.
