World number one Novak Djokovic began his journey in this year’s US Open on Monday by successfully overcoming a late surge of opponent Jerzy Janowicz.

He won the tie 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 against his Polish counterpart, but the Serbian made headlines with his brilliant impersonation of legendary singer-songwriter Phil Collins.

During the on-court interview after his victory, he was asked about his recent struggles with injuries and if he has healed completely, to which Djokovic replied by dancing and singing: “I can’t dance, I can’t talk, all I think about is the way I walk.”

It was less of a coincidence for him to choose that song as Collins performed on the opening night of the tournament and Djokovic’s own encounters with recurring injuries in recent months is perfectly summed up in the lyrics.

The 29-year-old has time and again restrained from disclosing facts about the injuries as well as the extent of his problems.

The third round exit from Wimbledon this year against Sam Querrey dashed his hopes of securing a calendar Grand Slam, after which, Djokovic hinted that injuries were hampering him in his progress and that he could sideline himself from the Davis Cup later that month.

Although he competed in the first round against Kazakhstan in March, he failed to appear in the later stages of the Davis Cup against Great Britain in the quarter-finals.

His early exit from the Olympic Games in Rio took everyone by surprise, but his performance on Monday provided hope for Djokovic fans across the globe.

The reigning US Open champion got his year back on track with his latest win and will definitely be aiming for a commendable showing as the tournament progresses.

All will be keen on seeing the best of the Serbian star, but Djokovic will be pragmatic in his approach and keep injury issues at bay to continue his domination in the days to come.
