Last season, Mamadou Sakho had established himself as a firm fan favourite at Liverpool.
In April, Sakho scored his side's third goal during their incredible 4-3 comeback victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League. And then, under a week later, he scored during Liverpool's 4-0 victory in the Merseyside derby against Everton at Anfield.
Chants of ‘Sakho, Sakho, Sakho’ was often heard echoing around Anfield. But then, things changed.
The former Paris Saint-Germain man tested positive for a banned fat-burning substance which saw him miss the remainder of the season. While UEFA decided Sakho shouldn’t be punished any further, Jurgen Klopp had other ideas.
He sent his defender home from Liverpool’s tour of America after a series of misdemeanours - including turning up late for a flight, turning up late for a team meal and missing a treatment session.
After their falling out, Klopp was keen to offload Sakho this summer and made him available for loan or even a permanent move. However, the 26-year-old rejected moves to Besiktas, Stoke and West Brom at the end of the transfer window, with the Baggies even prepared to pay £20 million for him.
And, according to the Mirror, this has left Klopp ‘deeply frustrated’ with his refusal to leave the club. The report claims that the German manager will now ‘banish’ Sakho after he ignored his warnings about finding a new club.
Sakho was signed for £18 million from PSG three years ago but it doesn’t look like he will making another appearance for the Reds anytime soon. The Mirror claims that Klopp sees Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip, Ragnar Klavan and Joe Gomez all above Sakho in the pecking order, while Lucas Leiva can also cover in an emergency.
That leaves Sakho as the sixth choice centre-back at the club and seemingly having very little chance of playing for his side this campaign. Whether he can somehow win Klopp over in the coming months remains to be seen but it's looking increasingly unlikely.
It appears a season of playing in the reserves awaits for Sakho this season unless something dramatic happens.
