Whatever EA Sports did, they were always going to upset a few.

The gaming company have been releasing the ratings of the top 50 players in FIFA 17 all week and today was the culmination; the ratings of the best three players.

Having announced numbers 10 to four yesterday, it was obvious that Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar would make up the top three. The order, however, wasn’t know.

Given that Messi collected the Ballon d’Or in January, and the popular opinion is that the Argentine just shades Ronaldo, it was presumed that the Barcelona star would come out on top once again.

So when 6pm rolled around the ratings were released, football fans received quite a shock. For the first time since FIFA 09, Ronaldo has a better rating than Messi.

The Real Madrid forward takes the crown with a 94 rating, compared to Messi’s 93. Neymar, just like at the 2015 Ballon d’Or, is third with a rating of 92.

There has been a serious reaction on social media. Messi received a 94 rating in FIFA 16 so, according to EA Sports, he has decreased slightly in ability over the past year.

Strong as an ox

“The top ranked player in FIFA 17,” EA Sports say about Ronaldo, who was rated 93 in FIFA 16. “Cristiano Ronaldo has 92 Pace, 92 Shooting, 91 Dribbling and is as strong as an ox with 80 Physicality.”

The 31-year-old gets a boost after leading Real Madrid to Champions League glory and Portugal to Euro 2016 success.

He’s certainly showing no signs of slowing down. Though an injury has delayed his start to the domestic season, Ronaldo remains the player Zinedine Zidane will be hoping can fire his Madrid team to more trophies.

Topsy-turvy summer

The aim is the exact same for Messi. He received just as much attention as Ronaldo did over the summer, but not for the reasons he would have hoped for.

First, there was the defeat to Chile in the Copa America Final, which propelled him to announce his retirement to international football. The 29-year-old then received a 21-month suspended sentence for tax fraud.

Thankfully, football’s two big stars can turn their attentions to going head-to-head in La Liga. And if Messi needed any extra motivation to prove that he is the best player in football, EA Sports have just given it to him.
