It was clear for all to see that new Chelsea boss Antonio Conte had been hoping to add an established defender to his squad throughout the course of the summer transfer window.
The Italy boss left it late, of course, securing the services of flamboyant Brazilian David Luiz on transfer deadline day.
It was a deal that took fans of the west London outfit by surprise, as Luiz returned to the club he left behind two years ago.

What, then, does Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher make of the shock transfer? Well, it's fair to say that he didn't expect Conte to purchase Luiz but has highlighted exactly what the player will bring to Chelsea.
In his column for the Daily Mail, Carragher stated: "There is something about Luiz’s character that I like. I wouldn’t call him a leader as such but he is the kind of player who will make something happen or contribute a big moment. He is erratic but he has quality.
"Conte’s reign has started without a blemish and now he has added cover to the one area of his squad that was most needed, I can only see them getting stronger. I just didn’t think it would happen with David Luiz."
Carragher has also insisted that Luiz won't need a settling-in period in the Premier League, while he has admitted that he's fascinated to see how Conte will use his new signing.
The Reds legend stated: "For a start, they have brought him back to England for a fee significantly less than the £50million they got from his sale to Paris Saint-Germain. At the same time, though, you have to ask why PSG were prepared to take an £18m hit after just two years.
"Luiz had three years with Chelsea, so there won’t be a settling-in period, but I am fascinated to see what Antonio Conte has in mind. Was he desperate to sign him because he doesn’t have the characteristics of a typical Conte defender? Is he now going to play a back three?"
It's certainly going to be an interesting period for Luiz, who could make his second debut for the club at the Liberty Stadium against Swansea City next weekend.
