Kevin Garnett is one of the most intense competitors that the NBA has ever seen. His pregame ritual of banging his head against the stanchion and shouting at the crowd are just two instances where you can see the fury boil over onto the court.
Many of The Big Ticket’s teammates have colorful stories that end up showing the fans what it was like to be around that sort of intensity in their everyday lives.
During a conversation with The Player’s Tribune, Paul Pierce treated the audience to one of these great locker room stories. It centered on the grizzled forward’s explosion over somebody messing with his food.
Pierce said: “I remember one day after a game – we usually have food laid out for the players after the game. And the game is over, the players have burned so many calories, we’re hungry. And so, it’s time to eat once the game is over. We shower then we have a buffet.”
This is a common occurrence in NBA arenas. Near the locker rooms and media areas, there will be an assortment of food laid out for the players. It’s not uncommon to see player grabbing a bite to eat with their families before heading home.
This can lead to people lingering around the food hoping to snag some while no one is paying attention. Unfortunately, the former Celtics captain and his defensive anchor caught a glimpse of someone trying to mooch.
The Truth continued: “We see them making a plate with the players’ food, and I just remember going over there. Kevin Garnett was over there, and he kinda knocked the plate out of his hand and said, ‘This is the players’ food!’”
The moral of the story here is: don’t get between a man and his food. Also, when that man is one of the most intimidating presences in the NBA, it may be best to just stay out of his way.
