After winning last season’s Champions League, you’d think spirits in the Real Madrid dressing room would be extremely high.
However, that doesn’t appear to be the case. In fact, according to Catalan newspaper SPORT, it is actually the opposite with the dressing room close to “mutiny”.
The reason? Gareth Bale.
The report claims that some star players in the Madrid squad aren’t enjoying Bale’s arrogance from his recent good performances. They also don’t agree with the fact that the Welshman has asked Zinedine Zidane for a whopping €17 million-per-season - which would more than double many of the players at the club.
They believe that, despite scoring 60 goals in 125 appearances since arriving at the Bernabeu in 2013, Bale doesn’t deserve such a lucrative contract.
SPORT claim that “a bomb is ready to go off” with the “detonator already ticking down.”
The report certainly comes as a surprise, especially after Bale’s performances helped them to win the Champions League and almost overhaul Barcelona in the title race last season.
The former Southampton and Tottenham player may have struggled when he first arrived in the Spanish capital but his 19 goals in 23 La Liga matches last campaign demonstrated his true qualities. Also, Bale has started this season in fine form, scoring twice in their opening two league matches.
One thing we must consider it that SPORT is a Catalan newspaper, hence having connections to Barcelona. It would hardly be surprising if this report is just an attempt to unsettle the Madrid camp ahead of this season.
Make of it what you will.
