In any Premier League season, the Manchester derby is one of the most eagerly anticipated fixtures.

The two clubs have one of the biggest rivalries in European football and matches between the two sides are often full of drama.

But this season, it looks set to be more dramatic than ever.

With Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola in charge of Manchester United and Manchester City respectively, it’s sure to be a pulsating battle with the two managers having a very tempestuous relationship.

When you add the fact that the clubs have spent more than £300 million combined this summer and look set to go head-to-head for Premier League glory, it looks set to be an incredible occasion at Old Trafford on Saturday.

United may have begun a new era this season but they’ve had an indifferent couple of years. Since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement, they haven’t finished higher than fourth - finishing behind City on each occasion.

And their results against their ‘noisy neighbours’ haven’t exactly been good during that time. In fact, the Red Devils have only won once in their previous five Manchester derbies at Old Trafford.

Since then, the club have now gone through four managers with Ferguson, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and, now, Mourinho set to do battle against City.

Ahead of this Saturday’s clash, we’ve compared United’s starting XI over the previous five seasons under their four bosses. It’s fair to say, the players have changed dramatically since April 2013 when Ferguson’s side were beaten 2-1 by City.

Manchester United’s predicted XI vs. Manchester City | September 10, 2016 | Manager: Jose Mourinho

Goalkeeper: David de Gea
Right-back: Antonio Valencia
Left-back: Luke Shaw
Centre-back: Daley Blind
Centre-back: Eric Bailly
Centre-midfield: Paul Pogba
Centre-midfield: Marouane Fellaini
Attacking-midfield: Juan Mata
Attacking-midfield: Wayne Rooney
Attacking-midfield: Anthony Martial
Striker: Zlatan Ibrahimovic

The two sides clash at Old Trafford on Saturday hoping to preserve their 100% records in the Premier League so far. The bookmakers have made the home side favourites for the lunchtime clash, something that may have been impacted by the fact Guardiola’s side will be without Sergio Aguero through suspension. The footballing world will be watching.

Manchester United’s XI vs. Manchester City | 0-0 | October 25, 2015 | Manager: Louis van Gaal

Goalkeeper: David de Gea
Right-back: Antonio Valencia
Left-back: Marcos Rojo
Centre-back: Phil Jones
Centre-back: Chris Smalling
Centre-midfield: Morgan Schneiderlin
Centre-midfield: Bastian Schweinsteiger
Attacking-midfield: Juan Mata
Attacking-midfield: Ander Herrera
Attacking-midfield: Anthony Martial
Striker: Wayne Rooney

It was certainly a dull affair last October. The crowd were quiet for large periods of this match and you couldn’t really blame them during a 90 minute devoid of any attacking quality. Each side only had one shot on target each and it was only the third goalless Manchester derby in the Premier League era. One to forget.

Manchester United v Manchester City - Premier League

Manchester United’s XI vs. Manchester City | 0-3 | March 25, 2014 | Manager: David Moyes

Goalkeeper: David de Gea
Right-back: Rafael
Left-back: Patrice Evra
Centre-back: Phil Jones
Centre-back: Rio Ferdinand
Centre-midfield: Michael Carrick
Centre-midfield: Tom Cleverly
Centre-midfield: Marouane Fellaini
Attacking-midfield: Wayne Rooney
Attacking-midfield: Juan Mata
Striker: Danny Welbeck

Less than a month after this embarrassing 3-0 loss, David Moyes was sacked. Looking at a line-up with players like Jones, Rafael and Cleverly, it’s hardly surprising that United finishing seventh that season. This side simply doesn’t compare to their star-studding team of today. In fact, there are only four remaining players from that side.

Manchester United v Manchester City - Premier League

Manchester United’s XI vs. Manchester City | 1-2 | April 8, 2013 | Manager: Sir Alex Ferguson

Goalkeeper: David de Gea
Right-back: Rafael
Left-back: Patrice Evra
Centre-back: Phil Jones
Centre-back: Rio Ferdinand
Centre-midfield: Ryan Giggs
Centre-midfield: Michael Carrick
Attacking-midfield: Ashley Young
Attacking-midfield: Wayne Rooney
Attacking-midfield: Danny Welbeck
Striker: Robin van Persie

Ferguson may have suffered defeat at Old Trafford to his city rivals, but it was a minor blip in a title winning season. However, with an ageing Giggs in central midfield alongside Carrick, this side doesn’t exactly appear title winning on paper. Incidentally, De Gea and Rooney look set to be the only players that starting this match back in April 2013 that will start on Saturday.
