Scott Brown had been waiting for this moment since Joey Barton dismissed his ability after signing for Rangers in the summer.
"People keep talking about Scott Brown v Joey Barton," the English midfielder was quoted as saying by BBC Sport. "He's not even in my league. He's nowhere near the level of player I am.
"He can't get near me. If I play well, Brown doesn't stand a chance."
Brown then retaliated by suggesting Barton was, in fact, a closet Celtic supporter.
"I've not been in his league, he's in my league," Brown told reporters. "I think we'll get on really well, him being a Celtic fan, so I think we'll get on great."
This prompted Barton to post a photo of Brown wearing a Rangers kit when he was young.
Brown has the last laugh
However, it was Brown who’s ultimately had the last laugh.
Celtic thrashed their fierce rivals 5-1 earlier today - and there was a moment, after one of the goals, where Brown celebrated by making a gesture as he ran past his midfield opponent.
Scott Brown's post-match interview
Brown then ripped Barton apart in his post-match interview, claiming facing Barton was like ‘Men versus Boys’.
Asked what it was like going head-to-head with the former Manchester City man, Brown said: "Easy, yeah it was fine, there was no battle whatsoever.
"I think the scoreline talks for itself, it was pretty much men against boys at the end of the day."
Brown reveals what he told Barton
And asked what he said to Barton at 2-0, Brown added: "I was just making sure he was all right."
Odds on Barton lasting more than five minutes in the next Old Firm? Pretty slim.
