Cristiano Ronaldo has taken plenty of criticism over the years but it was quite strange to hear Xavi Hernandez lay into him earlier this week.
The Barcelona legend admitted on Spanish radio that the only people who believe Ronaldo is better than Lionel Messi are Real Madrid supporters.
“Messi will be number one until he wants,” Xavi told Cadena SER. “He’s superior to everyone and is the best in the world, unless you are Real Madrid.”
It’s not a surprise to hear who Xavi takes sides with in the Messi vs. Ronaldo debate. He spent years with the Argentinian at the Camp Nou, while Ronaldo played for Barcelona’s number one rival.
But it was the manner of his comments that was surprising. Xavi quite obviously thinks Messi is in another league to everyone else, Ronaldo included.
Events over the past year prove that not to be true. The Madrid star helped Los Blancos to Champions League success before captaining Portugal to glory at Euro 2016.
The 31-year-old won the Best Player in Europe award for his brilliant efforts.
Unhappy with Xavi’s words, Ronaldo has hit back in brutal fashion. He scored within six minutes of his return from injury in Madrid’s 5-2 win against Osasuna and didn’t waste any time afterwards letting the former Spain midfielder know how he felt.
“The most searched for player on the Internet is me,” the Portuguese international said, per Sport.
“Those that want to appear on front covers to promote things speak about me.
“What does it matter to me what Xavi says, he played in Qatar or I don’t know.
“He’s won everything but he’s never won a Ballon d’Or -- I have three.”
Ouch. Let the feud begin.
