This weekend has seen Liverpool add to their already solid start to the Premier League season with an emphatic win over the champions.
Having already put Arsenal to the sword this campaign, they hammered home a further cluster of four goals against Leicester City. It proved the perfect way to open the curtains at Anfield in 2016-17 and follow on from the new stand’s inauguration.
However, the Reds’ lack of a clean sheet proved a blot on the copybook nonetheless. Lucas Leiva, the man at fault for the goal, has reacted well though with a typically hilarious quip.

Liverpool were made to suffer for their persistent insistence on playing short from goal kicks. The Foxes ensured the recipients had to rush their passes via pressing high in light of the trend.
In the 38th minute, it paid off for the champions. Under pressure from Shinji Okazaki, Lucas played a suicidal ball back across his own goalmouth.

The pass had been intended for Simon Mignolet, but it zipped agonisingly past the Belgian and into the path of Jamie Vardy. The Englishman tapped home what will likely prove the easiest goal of his Premier League career.
Thankfully for Lucas though, it didn’t prove a great detriment to Liverpool’s cause. A brace from Roberto Firmino as well as strikes from Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana saw the Reds runaway 4-1 victors.
Liverpool supporters panned the Brazilian for the error and his cameo at centre-back certainly wasn’t the finest. Nonetheless, despite the highly embarrassing nature of the gaffe, Lucas has taken the incident reasonably lightly.
As seen in the video below, the 29-year-old laughed off the moment of madness by joking: “It was my first assist in ten years!”
In fitting with this Jurgen Klopp commented: “Lucas was man of the match because he made the match exciting – that’s what a man of the match has to do!”
However, it must be wondered whether the reactions would have been so jovial had the error actually impacted the result. In this case of this particular slip-up though, Lucas has largely been spared the blushes.
