Playing away to Barcelona was always going to a difficult match for Celtic.
But when the Catalan club are at the very top of their game, it’s a nigh on impossible task.
That appeared to be the case during the first-half of their Champions League clash at Camp Nou.
Brendan Rodgers’ side would probably have been happy to leave Catalonia with a point but it’s highly unlikely the Scottish club will come away with anything other than a defeat - and it could well be a heavy one.
With Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Neymar starting for the home side, anything other than a convincing win for Luis Enrique’s side looked unrealistic.
And when Messi lashed home from inside the box after just three minutes, the home fans were probably eyeing a big win.
But Celtic had the perfect opportunity to equalise when they were awarded a penalty after just 24 minutes. However, Moussa Dembele spurned his opportunity to level the scores when Jasper Cillessen made a save.
But the moment of the opening 45 minutes was, without doubt, Messi’s second goal.
Messi may well have been the player to stick the ball in the net, but Neymar must also be praised for the role he played in it.
Messi picked up the ball 30 yards out from Celtic’s goal and played the ball into Neymar’s feet. The Brazilian slipped the ball in between two defenders into the path of his Argentine teammate.
He then returned the ball to Neymar inside the box and the former Santos player had an opportunity to get a shot away. However, he unselfishly pulled the ball back to Messi on the six-yard box, who took one touch before making it 2-0.
Take a look at the brilliant goal below:
It was Barcelona at their very best.
It could be a very long second-half for Rodgers and Celtic with Neymar and Suarez no doubt wanting to join Messi on the scoresheet.
