Edinson Cavani used to be regarded as one of the most deadliest finishers in world football but, since leaving Napoli for Paris Saint-Germain in 2013, the Uruguayan’s reputation as a top-level striker has suffered a few hefty blows following profligate performances in the Champions League.
Tuesday night was no different: Cavani gave PSG the perfect start with a goal within the opening minute, but then missed a series of gilt-edged opportunities to put the game beyond Arsenal’s reach.
The Gunners then scored the equaliser through Alexis Sanchez with 13 minutes of the match remaining.
Respected French publication L’Equipe handed Cavani a 4/10 rating for his performance - the joint-lowest mark for a PSG player, along with Grzegorz Krychowiak - and, in truth, that was probably deserved.
However, Cavani has received a vote of confidence from none other than Piers Morgan.
Morgan sticks up for Cavani
The journalist and broadcaster believes that Cavani was, in fact, “excellent” against the team he supports on Tuesday - albeit “apart from his finishing”.
Moreover, he believes the South American forward would score 30 goals a season if he played in front of Mesut Ozil.
Reacting to Morgan’s tweet, Match of the Day host Gary Lineker replied: “That's quite a statement, Tubs. Like saying a journalist is brilliant apart from his writing.”
Piers then responded: “I know lots of brilliant journalists who can't write but break great stories…”
To which Lineker replied: “I don't know any brilliant strikers that can't finish.”
“Cavani's scored 54 goals for PSG in 99 games & 34 in 86 for Uruguay,” Morgan continued. “He knows how to finish.”
“Never said he couldn’t,” Lineker came back. “Just commenting on you saying he was brilliant 'last night' apart from his finishing.”
Piers then brought Giroud into the debate...
Piers then took a dig at Olivier Giroud…
“He's a class & speed above Giroud, that's my real point.”
Ending the debate, Lineker replied: “On that we can agree.”
