Jordan Henderson becoming the next Steven Gerrard has becoming something of a running joke.
There might have been a time when Liverpool fans thought it a possibility. But their optimism probably ended after watching Henderson perform in the early stages of his Anfield career.
But the England international’s goal against Chelsea was so reminiscent of a Gerrard thunderbolt that it’s raised those comparisons on social media.
Henderson collected the ball 30 yards out and did something Liverpool fans are not used to seeing him do: shoot.
The 26-year-old has been afraid to shoot on too many occasions. But at Stamford Bridge he had only one thing on his mind.
His effort flew into the top corner. It’s a goal that will be under consideration for Goal of the Season.
Henderson will never score a better goal. The fact that it gave Liverpool a 2-0 lead against the Blues makes it all the more sweeter.
Twitter, naturally, went wild. Some of football’s biggest names even reacted to the glorious goal.
However, it will have been Gerrard’s response that would have delighted Henderson the most.
Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer couldn’t help sharing their disbelief.
Lineker said: “That is quite magnificent from Henderson,” while his Match of the Day colleague added: “What a stunner! @JHenderson won’t hit many better in his life than that one!”
Too right, Alan.
Jurgen Klopp will be hoping that Henderson’s goal gives him the confidence to truly step into Gerrard’s boots. Nobody’s expecting him to morph into the Liverpool legend, but if he can contribute important goals in the manner Gerrard did then he’ll have done well.
Liverpool beat Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge, Dejan Lovren scoring the Reds' opener. Diego Costa scored in the second half but Antonio Conte's team couldn't find an equaliser.
