Pep Guardiola has only been at the Etihad Stadium for five minutes, but Manchester City are already playing like football’s equivalent of the Harlem Globetrotters.
City made it five wins from five Premier League fixtures with a convincing 4-0 victory over Bournemouth this afternoon.
Guardiola has now won all eight of his competitive matches in charge of the English club and every member of the team is performing at a significantly higher level compared to the end of last season.
Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring on the 15th minute, before Kelechi Iheanacho doubled the hosts’ advantage 10 minutes later.
Raheem Sterling made it 3-0 shortly after the half-time interval and summer signing Ilkay Gundogan added gloss to the score with a fourth goal in the 66th minute.
The only surprise was that City didn’t add a few more to their tally in the remaining 25 minutes.
Lineker: Sterling has turned into Messi!
While every player on the City team did themselves proud today, Match of the Day host Gary Lineker picked out Sterling for special praise.
In fact, he paid the English winger the highest possible compliment by comparing him to Barcelona’s five-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi.
“Guardiola has turned Sterling into Messi,” Lineker tweeted, “….well almost.”
Sterling is a player reborn
Sterling, who endured a difficult debut season at the Etihad last term following his £49 million move from Liverpool, has clearly rediscovered his form and confidence following Guardiola’s arrival.
The 21-year-old has now scored or assisted eight goals in his last six appearances for his club and is currently playing the best football of his career so far.
Sterling critics are now eating their words
It just goes to show how much of an impact coaches can make on players.
All those who have doubted Sterling’s ability over the past 12 months are now eating their words.
