There’s never a good time to face Barcelona, but the schedule gods certainly weren’t kind to Celtic and Leganes.
You knew that, after losing 2-1 to Alaves, Barcelona’s next opponents would feel the full wrath of Lionel Messi and co.
And they did. Barcelona hit Celtic for seven on Tuesday, while five were put past the unfortunate Leganes today.
Twelve goals in two games. Five for Messi, three for Luis Suarez and two for Neymar. What a brilliant way to respond.
It’s quite incredible to think that this might be the best version of ‘MSN’ we’ve seen. The terrific three have certainly got the treble in their sights.
The adjectives to describe MSN are endless. Brilliant. Magical. Incredible. Take your pick.
Gary Lineker summed it up best during Barca’s 5-1 win at Leganes on Saturday. After Neymar got in on the act, the Match of the Day presented tweeted the following:
“Oh look who’s joined the goal scorers: Neymar of all people,” the former Barcelona and England striker said. “MSN are ridiculous. The Harlem Globetrotters of football.”
The trio each scored in the first half to give the Spanish champions a 3-0 lead at half-time. Messi added another from the penalty spot after the restart before Rafinha added a fifth.
They’re a joy to watch. La Liga is incredibly fortunate that the two biggest teams in the league, Barcelona and Real Madrid, possess arguably the two finest attacking trios in Europe.
Messi's back after turbulent summer
Messi must be delighted to be back with his Barcelona pals are enduring a summer that saw him receive plenty of negative attention.
First there was the Copa America final defeat against Chile, which led to him announcing his international retirement (a decision which he’s since performed a U-turn on).
Then there was the 21-month suspended jail sentence for tax fraud.
Thankfully, the Argentine is in the spotlight once again for all the right reasons.
