Jose Mourinho knew he was facing a last-chance saloon when he arrived at Manchester United. His failure at Chelsea was as spectacular as it was unexpected, going from Premier League champion to the unemployment line in just seven months.

He got off to a great start at Old Trafford, bagging four big summer signings including the imperious duo of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba. Finally, the Red Devils had a manager capable of attracting the biggest names.

But could he get the results? That was always going to be the biggest question. Could Mourinho win his fourth title in England and his ninth overall?

Things got off to a great start. Wins against Leicester City (Community Shield), Bournemouth, Southampton and Hull City made them early favourites for the league title, but it's all gone a bit pear-shaped since then.

Three straight defeats – something he hasn't suffered since 2002 – have taken Manchester United from contenders to a team in crisis. There is even a suggestion that the Portuguese may well have lost his magic.

But is there any reason to panic? After all, it always takes time for a new manager to settle into his new surroundings, to embed his tactics on a new team and to get things really going.

In an effort to discover if Mourinho really has lost the plot, we've taken a look at his first seven games in charge of each of his last six managerial spells. Unfortunately, the reading isn't good.

Mourinho was given the unenviable task of rescuing a Porto team in freefall halfway through the campaign. He started brilliantly, winning four straight games on the bounce including a 3-2 victory over rivals Benfica. His run was ended by a two-legged Champions League tie against Real Madrid. They lost both legs narrowly (1-0, 2-1); defeats that  sandwiched a 3-2 defeat to SC Beira-Mar in the league.

Having won the Champions League with Porto, Mourinho arrived at Chelsea for his first spell in charge as the self-proclaimed  "Special One". And after seven games in charge, there was definitely a hint that something special was about to go down. Beating Manchester United on the opening day of the season set the ball rolling on what would be a triumphant campaign in which the Blues lost just one league game.

Inter Milan could not give Mourinho the funds that Roman Abramovich could but he managed to make do with what he had and turned the Italian outfit into a European force. His start was far from perfect with a 1-0 defeat to AC Milan blighting an otherwise encouraging record but it didn't hold them back. Inter would go on to win Serie A by 10 points.

Exactly the same record that he enjoyed in his first season at Chelsea, Mourinho got off to a good start at the Bernabeu in what would prove to be the toughest challenge of his career, beating Pep Guardiola. Barcelona would win the league this year, beating Real Madrid's 92 point tally by a mere four.

A rocky start to his return to Chelsea in a campaign that would ultimately see Manchester City and Liverpool fight it out for the league title. The Blues were in need of rebuilding after turbulent spells of management and Mourinho came in offering stability. That, unfortunately, would prove to be something he didn't have to give.

Possibly the most disappointing and well-documented start to a managerial stint, Mourinho has come in for some fierce criticism after defeats to Manchester City, Feyenoord and Watford. To be fair, he has never spent more in the summer leading up to his first campaign (£150m) and has never had more pressure to hit the ground running.
