Manchester United fans recently held a vote to judge whether Jose Mourinho should drop Wayne Rooney from the first team.

If you were to guess the number of fans who wanted him ousted, you’d probably guess somewhere in the region of 70 per cent. Rooney made a positive start to the campaign but has been anonymous for the past month.

However, the vote found that a remarkable 99.08 per cent of United fans want Rooney gone from the first team. 99.08 per cent!

The number of voters isn’t made clear but the fact that only 0.92 per cent believe Mourinho should persevere with the England international is frightening.

The conundrum of where Rooney should play, if at all, continued to rage on after Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to Watford. Roy Hodgson was accused of shoehorning Rooney into his team at Euro 2016 and now the same assertion is being thrown towards Mourinho.

United players are shocked with Mourinho

Rooney has stayed quiet on the whole situation by someone inside Old Trafford hasn’t. A leak is doing the rounds in today’s newspapers that offers a scathing assessment of the situation at Man United.

According to the Telegraph, players are shocked by the manner in which Mourinho has criticised his players. Prominent figures at the club claim Mourinho has a “hypnotic” presence over his players.

Rooney's view

If United supporters were seeking some comfort in all the drama, they won’t find it in Rooney’s view of the situation.

The United captain reportedly feels under immense pressure following his recent poor form, so much so that he is concerned about his place in the team for Saturday’s game at home to Leicester City.

Mourinho insisted last month that he had no qualms about dropping Rooney.

"I can take him out," he said after United beat Hull. "It’s no problem for me to take him out, no problem for him to be out.

Now even Rooney realises that it’s a serious possibility.

Fans are on his back

The once irreplaceable forward now finds his place under threat and with the fans on his back. After his performance against Watford, a supporter compiled a view of his worst moments in a video that has gone viral.
