However it has been a very heavily criticised protest as patriotic Americans have claimed that he is disrespecting the flag and the nation.
As with any sort of protest of this nature, it has brought the 49ers backup quarterback into the spotlight and unfortunately into the firing line.
Kaepernick was recently speaking about the reception to his protest and he confirmed that some have reacted in a very hostile manner.
Death threats have been fired at the NFL star since he started his protest, but he mains strangely positive about it.
"To me, if something like that were to happen, you’ve proved my point."
Surely the 49ers will not be happy to see such a relaxed attitude to the issue from their former second round draft pick.
However Kaepernick does not put much weight behind the threats and has not actually reported them to the 49ers team security.
Kaepernick meanwhile appears happy to remain in the firing line in order to keep his message alive and claims that he expected this kind of response.
"Granted, it’s not how I want it to happen, but that’s the realization of what could happen. I knew there were other things that came along with this when I first stood up and spoke about it. It’s not something I haven’t thought about.”
