West Ham accused of playing fan noise over Olympic Stadium tannoy

West Ham United looked like a club going places at the end of the last campaign. They had just had a terrific season under new manager Slaven Bilic and were preparing to move into the stunning Olympic Stadium, which had been completely repurposed at the expense of, well, you.

Yes, the taxpayer may have paid for those fancy retractable stands, the beautiful roof and even the claret and blue livery that wraps around it, but one thing we couldn't provide with our hard-won earnings is the atmosphere.

That would be down to the 60,000 fans, many of whom would be seeing West Ham matches for the very first time. The owners made sure many of the new season tickets sold out in their droves by making them exceptionally cheap, but even the £289 that some fans have paid is proving less value for money than they expected.

The Hammers have won just three of their six games there so far, one being against Accrington Stanley and another Domzale, whoever they are. Their defeats – Astra Giurgiu (2-1); Watford (4-2); Southampton (3-0) – has not only served to put Bilic's position in danger but also sucked the life out of their new arena.

Apparently, the crowds are so quiet at the formerly named Olympic Stadium that West Ham officials have decided to start pumping out artificial fan noise through the tannoy system. And just so we're clear, the brand new tannoy system is one of the many things West Ham had to pay for. That was, again, provided by you.

Unsurprisingly, Twitter is pretty disgusted that West Ham think they can fool Sky Sports viewers by increasing the volume in the stadium artificially. They are demanding an answer as to why the pre-recorded fan noise was pumped around the arena during Sunday's disastrous defeat to the Saints.

Take a look at the best reaction below:

As yet, there has been no comment from West Ham about the noise and no official confirmation that the noise was heard during the match. We'll be sure to update you when new information becomes available.
