Mykhailo Mudryk has certainly hit the ground running at Chelsea. The glare of the spotlight must be blinding for the 22-year-old as he takes to the Premier League stage with the heavy baggage of his £89 million price tag and the tumultuous transfer saga with Arsenal. It is, truth be told, circumstances under which many a talented footballer would wilt, especially when you consider the English top-flight's long history of breaking world-class ballers who have thrived elsewhere from Angel Di Maria to Andriy Shevchenko. And while, of course, it's too early to say for definite that Mudryk won't follow in their footsteps, he certainly made a positive start to life in Chelsea blue when he made his debut on Saturday.Taking to the field in the 0-0 draw with Liverpool, Mudryk looked like a live-wire down the left-hand side with his electric turn of pace and superglue dribbling with defenders all around.

Chelsea quiz: Where did these 15 signings start their careers?

How fast is Mykhailo Mudryk?

In fact, Mudryk's scintillating speed, which left James Milner in a tangle at one stage, was so devastating that it actually set a new Premier League record for the 2022/23 season.

That's because Opta confirmed on Tuesday that Mudryk reached an eye-watering top speed of 36.63 kilometres per hour (22.76mph) at Anfield, which is the fastest speed clocked in the league this season.

But it wasn't all simply down to raw talent and the genetic lottery, because rest assured that Mudryk has been putting in the hard yards in the gym to ensure that he'll have all the physical brawn he needs to thrive and survive in the Premier League.

What has Mudryk been doing in the gym?

We know so because performance coach Dima Chapovskyi has been uploading insights into Mudryk's training regime onto his Instagram page.

The trainer posted a number of clips on his Instagram story on Monday showing Mudryk completing a series of different exercises, including weight-lifting, in the Chelsea gym.

Chapovskyi even captioned the montage: "37.00. It's not temperature. It's Mudryk speed against Liverpool," complete with a sunglasses emoji just for good measure.

And while, yes, he did cheekily round up the speed figure to slightly higher than what Opta came to, the moral of the story is that Mudryk is one of the fastest players in recent Premier League history nonetheless.

To put Mudryk's top speed into context, Kyle Walker is widely considered to be the Premier League's fastest recorded player of all time with a dizzying top speed of 37.8 km/h posted during the 2019/20 season.

Across football in general, one of the highest clockings with any credence that we've seen at the very highest level was a blistering 38km/h burst by Kylian Mbappe back in 2018/19.

So, Mudryk still has some way to go before his pace borders on record-breaking territory, but all that hard work in the gym will at least see his current FIFA speed rating of 88 fly through the roof.
