Manchester United secured a 1-0 win against Zorya Luhansk last night but it wasn’t plain sailing for Jose Mourinho’s team.
While they were ruthless against Leicester City on Saturday, United looked like they were still managed by Louis van Gaal as they laboured to victory.
It took a 69th-minute winner from Zlatan Ibrahimovic to seal the points against the second-placed team in the Ukrainian league. The wage bills between the two teams couldn’t have been wider, but that wasn’t reflected in either team’s performance.
Ibrahimovic even admitted post-game that United must improve. “We could do much more,” the Swede reflected. “I expect more from the team.”
The 34-year-old, who scored his sixth goal of the season, should have direct that comment towards Marouane Fellaini.
There was a feeling when the season started that Fellaini had turned a corner at United. He didn’t play too badly in the opening few games - he was noticeably better than £89 million man Paul Pogba - but any signs of progress were quickly thwarted against Zorya.
The Belgian was among the worst players at Old Trafford. He frequently lost possession and slowed the game down. Worst of all, he was a detriment to his team, conceding a free-kick late on in a really dangerous place.
Fans react to Fellaini's display
The midfielder was trending on Twitter during the game but not for the right reasons. Check out the response to his performance below.
Fellaini wasn't the only one to come under criticism
It wasn’t just the afro-haired Belgian that United fans were upset with. Marcus Rojo and Jesse Lingard were also in their crosshairs.
Third with four to play
The Red Devils needed a win following their defeat to Feyenoord in the opening group game. United still have work to do in the Europa League - they sit third with four games still to play.
Mourinho probably expected his team to breeze through the earlier round but it’s proving pretty difficult. Needless to say, it’s hard to imagine Fellaini appearing in when United host group leaders Fenerbahce next month.
