Ask any football fan worth their salt to name the best goalkeeper of all time and you'll hear Gianluigi Buffon more often than not.
Still the most expensive goalkeeper 15 years after setting the record, the 38-year-old has won seven Serie A titles and a World Cup in a glittering career that is still going strong. That is, of course, until tonight.
Buffon took to the field to for the Azzurri for the 164th time on Thursday night to face Spain in what represented a crunch World Cup qualifying clash. (Scroll down to see the video)
The two teams will be amongst the favourites to win the trophy when the competition gets underway in 2018, but if they are to both qualify, one of them will have to come through a play-off – the game at the Juventus Stadium would go a long way to deciding who.
With Buffon in goal and Leonardo Bonucci at the back, Italy had a defence they thought they could rely on. That was until the most unthinkable of things occurred in the 55th minute – Buffon made a catastrophic error.
With Sevilla star Vitolo running onto a through ball, Buffon rushed out of his goal in an attempt to avoid a one-on-one situation. It's something he has done a hundred times before in his career but he has never executed it quite like this.
Still a good yard closer to the ball than anyone else, Buffon completely glided over the ball, giving Vitolo the easy job of tapping into an empty net. As you can imagine, the Internet is in a state of shock.

And the reaction
Luckily, Daniele De Rossi spared Buffon's blushes by equalising from the penalty spot in the 84th minute. The equally dependable Sergio Ramos made a rash challenge on Eder, giving the Roma man the chance to earn Italy a vital point.
