As soon as Jose Mourinho was unveiled as the new Manchester United manager, pundits and supporters alike feared for Juan Mata’s future at Old Trafford.
The pair had a notoriously frosty relationship at Chelsea which ultimately saw Mata sold and many thought a similar situation would unfold at United. After all, you wouldn’t put it past the often trigger happy Special One.
However, such predictions couldn’t have been further from the truth with the Spaniard having shined under Mourinho. In fact, his form has been to such an extent that United could be set to reward him with a new contract.

Since moving to Manchester United in January 2014, Mata has consistently been one of the Red Devils’ finest performers. It seemed that under both David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, with Mata in the side, United couldn’t go too far wrong.
Mourinho’s arrival though looked to threaten this rich vein of form. The Special One, as he’d shown at Chelsea, isn’t one to look at the past and views all his new players with a clean slate.

Consequently, it didn’t bode too well for Mata. The 28-year-old had won the Player of the Season award in his first two seasons at Chelsea only to be sold halfway through his third due to Mourinho.
Yet, astonishingly, the two seem to have struck up a formidable relationship at Old Trafford. It appears that fears of clashes and disagreements between the two have dissolved after barely two months.
This is highly understandable though as Mata has been in fantastic form. Five Premier League starts, two goals and an assist is certainly indicative of a fast and flourishing start to the season.
Mata’s form and Mourinho’s satisfaction has subsequently prompted action from the United hierarchy. In addition, according to the Mirror, this action will be coming in the form of a new long-term contract.
The deal is believed to keep the 28-year-old at Old Trafford for a further four years, ending concerns over the fact his current contract finishes in the summer.
This all comes just weeks after a Mata exit appeared a growing inevitability.
However, having thrived upon the game time initially drip fed to him by Mourinho, the playmaker has saved his United career. Considering his recent form, it’s no more than he deserves.
