We all know that Belgium would beat Gibraltar in tonight’s World Cup qualifier, but we didn’t expect them to take the lead in just seven seconds.
But that’s exactly what happened, Crystal Palace’s Christian Benteke wasting no time in opening the scoring.
The former Liverpool man capitalised on a misplaced pass, dribbled into the box and smashed a left-footed shot past the goalkeeper. Plenty of fans inside the Estadio Algarve probably hadn’t even found their seats when Benteke scored.
Clearly, Thierry Henry’s influence is being felt.
Roberto Martinez hired the ex-Arsenal and Barcelona man to join his coaching staff and the Red Lions are reaping the benefits, having scored seven goals in their past two games and needing only seven seconds to open the scoring against Gibraltar.
Check out Benteke’s goal below.
Benteke scored a hat-trick as Belgium crushed Gibraltar 6-0.
Axel Wiesel doubled the lead and Benteke added a second in the 43rd minute. The rout continued in the second half with Dries Martens, Benteke and Chelsea's Eden Hazard scoring a fourth, fifth and sixth.
The 25-year-old’s hat-trick means he has now scored six goals in his past six games, having scored three times for Palace this season.
And what’s behind his good form? Good fortune, apparently.
“I’m not the only striker in form, but I’m good. I’m happy to be in this vein of form, I’m going to take advantage of it. After the bad luck, I’m trying to make the most of my good luck.
“I’m trying to repay through my performances the price they paid for me.”
Palace paid Liverpool £27 million for Benteke in the summer and he looks like a worthy investment.
