South African players perform the dab whilst in possession

The dab. Love it or hate it, it looks like it’s here to stay.

If you don’t like it, blame NFL star and Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton who appeared to make it famous.

Now, almost dozens of footballers perform the dab in celebration after scoring a goal or winning the match.

The likes of Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Romelu Lukaku are partial to the odd dab and the craze has even spread abroad to former Liverpool workhorse Dirk Kuyt.

However, today, the dab evolved.

While we often see it done by a player after he’s just scored, two players have taken it a step further and done it in the middle of a match - whilst in possession.

Ok, it didn’t happen in one of the top European leagues, it happened in South Africa - but it’s got to start somewhere.

The Free State Stars were playing against the Platinum Stars in the PSL Reserve League when teammates from the home side decided they would start showboating.

In the second-half, Langelihle Ndlovu and Pule Mmodi both decided they would dab with the ball at their feet.

‘Oh they were 5-0 up and the game was over,’ is probably what you’re thinking.

However, just take a look at the scoreboard and it shows that they were just 3-2 ahead.

I doubt their manager was too pleased to see them dabbing whilst in possession in such a close encounter.

What we’d love to see now is Pogba and Lingard to copy this during next Monday’s clash between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield.

We’ve got a feeling Jose Mourinho probably wouldn’t play them ever again if they did such a thing, though.
