Rio Ferdinand described David de Gea as the best goalkeeper in the world after the Spain international’s heroic performance for Manchester United against Liverpool at Anfield on Monday night.
De Gea, United’s Player of the Year for the last three seasons in a row, produced two fabulous saves in the second half to earn the Red Devils a valuable point against their fierce rivals.
But is De Gea really the world’s best ‘keeper at the moment? One star who doesn’t agree with Ferdinand’s opinion is Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres.
So, the Spanish striker reckons Manuel Neuer is the best, right?
Well, no, actually. Torres believes there’s one goalkeeper is who currently performing at a higher level than both Neuer and De Gea.
Torres names the world's best goalkeeper
Taking to Instagram, ahead of Atletico’s Champions League clash against Rostov on Wednesday night, Torres hailed his teammate Jan Oblak as the world’s No. 1.
“Off to Russia with the best goalkeeper in the world @oblakjan,” Torres wrote, “#forzaatleti”.
Oblak has been fantastic for Atletico
Oblak has been magnificent since Atletico signed the Slovenia international to replace Thibaut Courtois in 2014.
Last season, the 23-year-old was named in both the UEFA Champions League and La Liga teams of the season.
Atleti conceded just 18 goals in La Liga last season - 11 fewer than champions Barcelona and 16 fewer than local rivals Real Madrid - and Oblak played a massive part in keeping teams at bay throughout the campaign.
Oblak rarely puts a foot wrong for Atleti
Oblak has continued from where he left off at the start of the current campaign, conceding just three goals in Atletico’s opening eight matches.
Diego Simeone’s men currently sit top of La Liga with the best goal difference in the league after hammering Granada 7-1 at the Vicente Calderon on Saturday night.
