The WWE is still pushing Roman Reigns to be the face of their company in the future, and they're gradually building towards that eventuality.
The now United States Champion has been improving over recent months since taking a step back from the main event scene, especially with his promos, but he isn't quite at the level for all fans to accept him as a top babyface.
One of the reasons is because the storylines which WWE creative write for him aren't quite as good as they should be for the high ambition the company has for such a superstar. WWE Hall of Famer Stone Cold Steve Austin reflected on this fact in one of his recent podcasts.

He said according to Cageside Seats: "He needs a little bit more fire on the offense, a little more active, sell on the run on defense. I think that'd help him out. He needs to pick his head up. He needs to sell on the run, be more active. He has a bad habit of dying when he sells.
"To his credit, he will sell for anybody. He's very unselfish in the ring in regards to that. But because he sells so much, he just needs a more active sell to keep those people buying in, so he can get that sympathy. He's a big, good looking guy. He's putting his game together. Come up with better storylines for the guy. I still have high hopes for Roman Reigns."
Stone Cold has made some great points here. WWE does need to improve upon how they write storylines for Reigns to push him as a top babyface. Babyfaces don't exactly go out and ruin weddings every week.
What WWE creative needs to do is give United States champion the right storyline that will propel him towards that top babyface status. Pairing him with the likes of Sasha Banks along the way too helps as it gives fans a reason to cheer, rather than boo him.
The only problem they have is finding the right competitor for that storyline to pair with Reigns. The Rusev storyline feels like it has run its course after their Hell in a Cell match, so it will be interesting to see who Reigns' next feud is with moving forward.
